An unusual and playful piece of Swiss design from the 1980s.
The ‘Fächermann’ bookcase was designed by Susi & Ueli Berger in 1977 and produced by Röthlisberger in Switzerland. Taking the shape of a standing human figure, the bookcase combines furniture and art in one distinctive design. Its cleverly arranged wooden shelves form the body of the figure, creating multiple compartments for books, objects, and display pieces. This example retains its original natural wood finish, beautifully revealing the layered plywood construction and the details of the design. The original Röthlisberger manufacturer’s label is still present on the back. A striking and highly recognizable design that works equally well as a functional bookcase or a freestanding piece of art.
